How to Prepare for Your Headshot Session: A Simple Checklist

Getting ready for a headshot session doesn’t have to be complicated. A little prep can help you feel more relaxed and confident, which makes for better photos. Here’s a simple checklist to help you show up feeling ready and looking like yourself.

1. Choose Your Outfit in Advance

Pick out your clothes at least a day or two before your session so you’re not scrambling at the last minute. Bring at least one backup top just in case. Solid colors usually work best. Avoid busy prints, stripes, or logos that can distract from your face.

Make sure your clothes fit well and feel comfortable when you sit or stand. A little structure, like a blazer or jacket, often photographs well.

2. Take Care of Grooming

If you’re planning a haircut or color, try to do it about a week before your session so it has time to settle. Trim facial hair if needed and bring a brush or comb to the shoot. If you wear makeup, go slightly more defined than your everyday look, especially around the eyes and lips. If you’re hiring a makeup artist, choose someone with experience in photography.

3. Get a Good Night’s Sleep

You don’t need to overhaul your routine, but try to get some good rest the night before. It really does help with your skin, your eyes, and how you feel in general.

4. Drink Water and Eat Something

Stay hydrated the day before and the day of your session. Don’t skip meals. A light snack or small meal beforehand helps keep your energy up and avoids that crashy, low-blood-sugar feeling during the session.

5. Clean Glasses and Bring Essentials

If you wear glasses, give them a quick clean so there’s no dust or smudges. If you’re bringing a change of clothes, toss them in on hangers to avoid wrinkles. Lip balm, powder, or a blotting sheet can help right before your photos too.
